Steel Wheels Rolling, A Personal Journey of Railroad Photography

Creator: J. Parker Lamb | 2001-06-20

Five decades of railroad exploration by J.Parker Lamb is distilled into over 200 stunning black and white photographs with fascinating personal anecdotes and historical notes.

Publisher: Boston Mills Pr

About this book
The second book in the Boston Mills Press Masters of Railroad Photography series presents the work of J. Parker Lamb -- from heart-stopping pans of Gulf, Mobile & Ohio FAs loping through the backwoods of Mississippi, to dramatic images of Missabi Road 2-8-8-4s slogging through the rain in their eleventh hour, and artful time exposures of slant-nosed Seaboard Es in the North Carolina night. Lamb is one of America's most talented and respected railroad photographers. His remarkable images have recorded early diesels in Alabama, Mississippi and the Carolinas, the end of steam in the American Midwest, and contemporary railroading from his home state of Texas to New England, California and Canada. From Steel Wheels Rolling: Chapter 2, The Dawn of Diesel It was during a visit to the Boligee depot that I first encountered a locomotive of a different kind. The shiny, green and white Southern streamliner that called on Boligee that memorable 1939 day didn't smoke like regular engines. In fact, the shovel-nosed motor car and trailer assigned to the Meridian-Birmingham Vulcan was like nothing I'd seen before...The mysterious newcomer was the subject of great interest and prompted considerable discussion. My father's words that day echo still. "Son, someday all locomotives may be like this one."

    Album of the year!

0 5/5 Mark Litz (Los Angeles, CA) - See all my reviews Verified Purchase(What's this?) This review is from: No More Rain (MP3 Music) I don't know how they managed, but Blue Ridge Mountains based The Steel Wheels consistently manage to outdo themselves on album after album. They open their new album No More Rain appropriately with a (very worthy) cover of Tom Waits' "Walk Away," setting an intense tone for the album. The next two tracks, "Until the Summer Comes" and "Kiss Me Like a Stranger," Trent Wagler slows it down and reminds us just why we can't get enough of his unmistakable vocal style.I'm no music critic, so all I'll say about the rest of the album is give it a listen. If you're already a Steel Wheels' fan, you definitely won't be disappointed. If you're new to them, one listen and you'll be hooked. No More Rain shows positive growth and maturity from who I consider to be the very best live act I've ever seen. 0 Help other customers find the most helpful reviews  Was this review helpful to you? , April 18, 2013

Stones Comeback; First Album of Their Elder Years

This is the third release of "Steel Wheels" which was recorded as a digital album in the first place. This version is louder as most newer CD's are these days, but there really isn't any reason for someone who has enjoyed a previous release of this album to go rushing out to buy this release. That being said, "Steel Wheels" is a good album, not a great album but is a huge improvement over "Dirty Work" and surely better than the all-too conspicuous attempt to sound current, "Uundercover." It's also the last album that Bill Wyman served as a member of the band. The album opens with "Sad Sad Sad" a pretty standard Stones rocker. "Mixed Emotion" is the first single from the album often called "Mick's Demotion" given Keith Richiards plays a more central position in the band. Other noteworthy numbers include, "Terrifying" a song with latin jazz overtones. "Rock and a Hard Place" is another single with some fine Ronnie Wood guitar work. "Almost Hear You Sigh" is an incredible soulful ballad... 4/5 Socrates Stewart "Baltimore Boy, Music Collec... (Owings Mills, MD) - See all my reviews Verified Purchase(What's this?) The archetypal Stones album!

It's almost as if Mick Jagger and Keith Richards sat down and wrote the songs for this album thinking "what is it that people want from a Stones album?".They apparently decided that people want both the rockers, the ballads, and perhaps a bit of modest experimentalism ("Continental Drift"), and that's what "Steel Wheels" provides. It opens with two tough rockers, "Sad, Sad, Sad" and "Mixed Emotions", followed by the somewhat less remarkable "Terrifying" and "Hold On To Your Hat", and the nice, bluesy "Hearts For Sale"."Blinded By Love" is a lovely melody, a folkish, acoustic ballad with Phil Beer (who worked with the Fairport Convention, Mike Oldfield and the Albion Band among others) playing mandolin. Then comes one of the six (!) singles that were lifted off "Steel Wheels", the ever-so-slightly disco-influenced "Rock And A Hard Place".Keith Richards supplies the groovy, muscular rocker "Can't Be Seen", which sounds like something off one of... 4/5 Docendo Discimus (Vita scholae) - See all my reviews This review is from: Steel Wheels (Audio CD) It's almost as if Mick Jagger and Keith Richards sat down and wrote the songs for this album thinking "what is it that people want from a Stones album?".They apparently decided that people want both the rockers, the ballads, and perhaps a bit of modest experimentalism ("Continental Drift"), and that's what "Steel Wheels" provides. Perfect blend of "folk" and "Americana"

I discovered this band in 2010 at the annual Folk Alliance Conference and was really impressed by their live show. I came home with their then-new CD "Red Wing" and found that they were just as good on CD as live. You can see my review of "Red Wing" on Amazon. The album went on to get lots of airplay and hit the Americana Music charts. This follow-up is just as good with lead singer (and writer - or co-writer - of 10 of the dozen tracks) Trent Wagler (who also plays guitar and banjo) using his rough-hewed voice to give the songs their strength,. But this isn't a "one-man band" by any means. The other three members add some harmonies (especially on the a capella sections) and damn fine instrumental backing. While this group from the Shenandoah Valley of Virginia promotes themselves as "Americana", they easily fall into the folk category. This album equals, or exceeds, "Red Wing". These guys get better and better.I hope you found this review both... 4/5 Steven I. Ramm "Steve Ramm "Anything Phon... (Phila, PA USA) - See all my reviews, April 1, 2012

This is the next generation of Folk and Americana Bands

I discovered this band at this year's Folk Alliance Conference and wanted to hear more so I checked out their new CD "Red Wing". They are as good on "record" as they are performing live. This album shows both their musical talents (with guitarist/vocalist Trent Wagler. who wrote the majority of the songs here, singing with somewhat raspy voice) and the other three members filling in on mandolin, fiddle and bass. The traditional songs (such as the gospel closer "Working on a Building") mix with the new tunes ("Hymn for the Unsung" and two new instrumentals). The centerpiece is the title track, in which Wagler slowed down the old song about the "Indian maid", added new lyrics, and got Robin and Linda Williams to join the band on backing vocals.I've played the album twice so far and am still discovering new pleasures. Listening to the CD in private allows these discoveries. But I'll still go to see them play live if they come my way.Steve Ramm"Anything... 4/5 Steven I. Ramm "Steve Ramm "Anything Phon... Social Justice Bluegrass

My daughter took my husband and I to see this group. We did not expect the authentic roots music, the musical skill, the interesting lyrics and the unflinching but inclusive message. I was a little young to watch Pete Seeger's early career but I feel all the excitement and commitment I sense in Pete Seeger's music in this group. The songs carry a strong sense of social justice and community obligation all accomplished in an inviting and sometimes humorous way. Like good folk music often does, there is more invitation than condemnation. But underlying all the songs is a very unique and modern sensibility, with strains of humility, inspiration and stark existential awareness of the human need to find meaning. We have been debating whether we might call this genre "Social Justice Bluegrass" or "Existential Gospel" music.Whatever you decide to call it, I can't recommend a musical experience more highly. We now have all the albums but this is a frequent favorite because it... 5/5 M. Lane Kelemen "mlk ann arbor" - See all my reviews, August 11, 2013

    Great Trucking Game with Limitations

There are probably two types of people out there interested in this game: people who've played one of the 18 Wheels series and people who haven't.If you have played on of these games, skip down a bit.If you haven't, depending on what sort of simulations you're in to, this game may give you hours of enjoyment or boredom. The basic tack of the game is, as you'd expect, you get some money, an entry-level rig and a lack of any reputation. Your goal is to grab loads to haul and drive them across the US and to some extent Canada and Mexico. As you haul loads, you'll make more money for upgrades for your rig (or a whole new rig) and you'll gain a reputation. Your success and your reputation lead to your ability to hire on other drivers and expand your trucking empire. To counteract your success, you'll have to deal with long (and in some cases boring) hauls, police (checking speed, general driving rules, etc), and to some extent, the competition... 3/5 Grieger (Los Angeles, CA USA) - See all my reviews, January 30, 2010

    It's OK

This is nothing more than an okay game, in my opinion. It is a decent game, but is missing some features. The graphics are very plain. They need liveliness. In newer games, there is more detail. That is exactly what this needs. There should be more trees, and more realistic grass and desert sand. I would like for there to be more cactus plants in the desert as well, as in real life. Or, at least more realistic sand, and flatter land. I really like the desert in 18 WOS Extreme Trucker, a newer game. They are very detailed, and look nothing like the old ones. I think that the vehicles in this game, including the AI vehicles, need a lot of improvement in apperance. The surfaces and textures on trucks in some of the old games are actually better! But there is a good selection of trucks included though. There are some invisible walls on the ramps to the gas stations, that should be removed because they can damage a person's truck. It is not right that you can be driving very well and all... 3/5 M. Harris - See all my reviews = Fun:, August 27, 2010

    Nothing New

Valusoft/SCS has created a great series in 18 Wheels of Steel. They've constistantly kept the price [...]) and have made great products. The 18WoS franchise has been a great driving simulator and buisness sim as well as being pretty stable (not counting Convoy).Unfortunately it seems like the 18WoS series is beginning to get stale and repetitive. The cities need to be lively! Going into cities which seem so familiar and seeing no one walking or people coming out of shops and office buildings just doesn't cut it anymore. The traffic signals even look the same. Turning lanes would be a nice addition because a accident is just waiting to happen, plus when you wait for a clear path making a left turn, you are constantly being honked at. Please, no more cardboard buildings. In the latest release by Valusoft/SCS American Long Haul has the same graphics as Haulin as well as the same premise.
