Stanley, The Impossible Life of Africa's Greatest Explorer

Creator: Tim Jeal | Biography & Autobiography - 2008-10-28

Jeal recovers the reality of Stanley’s life—a life of almost impossible extremes—in this moving story of tragedy, adventure, disappointment, and success. Few have started life as disadvantaged as Stanley.

Publisher: Yale Univ Pr

About this book
"A magnificent new life . . . [and] a superb adventure story. . . . There have been many biographies of Stanley, but Jeal's is the most felicitous, the best informed, the most complete and readable and exhaustive, profiting from his access to an immense new trove of Stanley material." -- Paul Theroux, front page, New York Times Book Review Henry Morton Stanley, so the tale goes, was a cruel imperialist who connived with King Leopold II of Belgium in horrific crimes against the people of the Congo. He also conducted the most legendary celebrity interview in history, opening with, “Dr. Livingstone, I presume?” But these perceptions are not quite true, Tim Jeal shows in this grand and colorful biography. With unprecedented access to previously closed Stanley family archives, Jeal reveals the amazing extent to which Stanley’s public career and intimate life have been misunderstood and undervalued. Jeal recovers the reality of Stanley’s life—a life of almost impossible extremes—in this moving story of tragedy, adventure, disappointment, and success. Few have started life as disadvantaged as Stanley. Rejected by both parents and consigned to a Welsh workhouse, he emigrated to America as a penniless eighteen-year-old. Jeal vividly re-creates Stanley’s rise to success, his friendships and romantic relationships, and his  life-changing decision to assume an American identity. Stanley’s epic but  unfairly forgotten African journeys are thrillingly described, establishing  the explorer as the greatest to set foot on the continent. Few biographies can claim so thoroughly to reappraise a reputation; few portray a more extraordinary historical figure.

I have both the waterproof and non-waterproof versions. The waterproof version will not hold a charge very well and therefore gives very little operating life. About to throw it away, I decided to look into what was happening as the non-waterproof version works great and others have had the poor battery performance as well with this model. The rotating on/off switch does not penetrate thru the plastic. Instead it moves a magnet that causes one to three internal magnetic reed switches to activate and allow current to flow to the light. The dimmer moves one of them as well I think. To try it yourself - remove the cover, unscrew the three top screws then unscrew the battery charge lid retainer (one screw to the plastic tab). Pull the light out - no wires get in the way. Try a refrigerator magnet over the black area until the light comes on.The problem is with the reed switches. In the OFF (open) position the switches are not truly open, rather they still have a resistance of... 1/5 rough n ready "The General" (California) - See all my reviews Verified Purchase(What's this?) Very good, but not perfect.

This is the second spotlight I bought this week. The first was a Coleman 4351-700. I did not realize from looking at it on the Internet how big and heavy it would be. It is enormous and extremely heavy because it uses a sealed lead acid battery (SLA) (like a car battery). My wife said it was too heavy and she couldn't get her hand around it. I returned it without ever opening the bubble pack packaging. The Stanley seemed like everything I ever wanted. I need it for my sail boat where space is at a very high premium and every pound of weight really matters. This light is small, powerful, and light weight. The light has a very tight beam and is even more powerful than I need. It was easy to light up trees that were 1500 feet away. I didn't have line of sight to anything further away on my first outing. You can adjust the light brighter or dimmer than the default setting. I didn't notice much more light when I went to the brightest setting. Okay, let me just say WOW WHAT A SPOTLIGHT!

I was actually lost looking around on the internet for the "Perfect Father's Day Gift" for not only my Father, but my Husband as well. I wasn't thinking I would hit it out of the ball park with the same gift for both. For my father I thought flashlight or spotlight because what do you buy for the man that has everything? I remembered when I was little, 5 or 6 and my Dad would always have a Mag light flashlight for everything, one in his truck, one in the house, when they came out with the small ones he bought those too, so I figured a flashlight or spotlight might help him around the lake and would definitely be a great gift for him.. I can't afford anything else that man would want :)My Husband, the Camper, Camping is his life, I got him a Tent for Father's Day, a Beautiful Coleman Tent he wanted, but then I bought the light for my Dad and had to get the same for my Husband "from the kids".. :)First let me tell you, we've been faithfully... 5/5 R. Great handheld spotlight

This thing throws a lot of light, yet is very lightweight and compact for a pistol grip spotlight. I just got it, so I can't comment on how long it will last, other than to say that it looks and feels quite sturdy. The grip is comfortable, and the trigger lock/unlock bar and the beam intensity button can be activated with the same hand holding it. It has a very nice fold out stand built-in. This allows you to set the light on the ground with the beam pointing up at a 45 degree angle. The light beam is white and bright with a long reach. It has an intense focused beam in the center which is 10 - 15 feet in diameter at about 150 feet. Surrounding that is a 90 degree cone of light that is fairly substantial. I'm surrounded by trees, so I can't estimate how far the beam reaches, but an object 150 feet away is lit up like daylight. The focus of the beam is not adjustable. The light always comes on at high intensity, but the power toggle is easy to reach. The LED beam gives... 5/5 C. M. Girlinghouse (Crosby, Texas United States) - See all my reviews, July 20, 2013

    Super bright light, awesome!

I have a 5 acre lot, and needed a good spotlight for looking at my yard at night. I had been using my makita rechargeable flashlight that came with my screw driver/drill set. it was ok, but not bright enough to find my dog even at 300 feet... unless she was looking at me and her eyes reflected. So a replacement was on the list!I first tried the Cyclops 9w 3x LED spotlight. It was pretty much the same as my makita light, just whiter since it was LED and a little more focused. At 300 feet -- only a TAD brighter... not worth the money. So, after some more research and looking at a flashlight message board, i figured I'd give this light a try. I got it 7 hours before it got dark, perfect for the 6 hour initial charge time (it indicated fully charged before that). So, to the point: This light is AMAZING. I didn't know a single LED could produce that much light, and throw that far. At 300 feet, you can see very brightly and in detail. AT 500 feet,... 5/5 WiseBuyer - See all my reviews Verified Purchase(What's this?) Best spotlight I have found -- and at reasonable cost

After going through about a dozen spotlights in a dozen years, I believe I have found one that might last more than a year. Most of the others were rendered useless by cheap Chinese Sealed Lead Acid (SLA) batteries that are hard to find -- and might cost as much as a replacement spotlight with S&H included. This light apparently uses standard 18650 Li batteries so if you can manage to get it opened, the batteries can be replaced at reasonable cost.I like the extremely effective light pattern of a sharply focus beam with a perfect amount of spill light. The beam and fill are very circular. Because of the sharp focus, the reach is remarkable. I compared it side-by-side to a 2 Million CP Power Onboard spotlight with a 5 1/2 inch reflector and the Fat Max was brighter, whiter, and had longer reach. It was also probably about one-fourth the size and weight. The weak spot for the light is the small charger and the much too small wire that connects the charger to the... 5/5 Jim Holloman (Atlanta, GA USA) - See all my reviews Verified Purchase(What's this?) Super Spotlight

I did not purchase this through Amazon. It was on sale at the local Lowes for $24. I couldn't resist at this price. I was a bit skeptical about this spotlight being that it was only 5 watts and only one led bulb. But I assure you that it lives up to the highest of expectations. The led bulb is ultra-high output (192 lumens??) and it fully rechargeable. I purchased it because I live in the city, often hear noises or rustling in my backyard (where my bedroom is located). I was always going out to my deck to investigate the sounds, carrying my small handheld flashlights (also led, but lower output). The light was always too dim to really see what was going on. This spotlight is almost overkill. The light shines a bright spot of white light with a larger, not as bright halo around the spot. The trigger is easy to press, but the light kills as soon as the trigger is released, which is a bit odd. You can "lock" the trigger with the safety lock switch, which will keep the light on if you are... 5/5 M. Shin (Chicago, IL) - See all my reviews, December 9, 2009

More to come as I test more

I'm not finished testing it, but I want to advise potential buyers of a couple of drawbacks to this light...one being mentioned several times by other reviewers, and one SURPRISINGLY not yet stated by any reviewer. First (as noted by several), the fact that the brightness control has no memory is a real pain. It will maintain the brightness at which you set it ('clumsily' via the up and down buttons at the rear of the unit), but the second you let go of the trigger and the light shuts off, the 'memory' of where you 'last set' the brightness is LOST. So, 5 seconds later, when you turn on the light again, you have to go through the awkward process of adjusting the brightness control, which takens concentration...and which diverts your attention from where you are walking, etc. But as for the 2nd drawback, I'm VERY surprised that no one, as yet, has mentioned this. Despite 'splashing' the phrases: '192 lumens'!!! and "10 hours runtime" on the front of the package, these two figures don't... 2/5 Frugal Bargain Hunter (Los Angeles, CA) - See all my reviews This review is from: Stanley SL5W09 5 Watt LED Spotlight (Tools & Home Improvement) I'm not finished testing it, but I want to advise potential buyers of a couple of drawbacks to this light...one being mentioned several times by other reviewers, and one SURPRISINGLY not yet stated by any reviewer. I followed the instructions but got a VERY short duration light

0 1/5 Frugal Bargain Hunter (Los Angeles, CA) - See all my reviews Verified Purchase(What's this?) This review is from: Stanley SLM09 2M Series Spotlight (Tools & Home Improvement) I followed the instructions to let it charge for a WHOPPING 20 hours on the first run, but despite that, all I got was 15 minutes of quickly diminishing light. The next run (...I tested it again because sometimes rechargable batteries have to be 'conditioned'), only yielded 5 additional minutes of rapidly diminishing light. And this thing is GIGANTIC. I thought it would be like their new, compact, 'yellow' 5 watt models that I've seen in the stores, but this one is about 3 times the size. 0 Help other customers find the most helpful reviews  Was this review helpful to you? , July 14, 2010

0 1/5 Jillian (WNY) - See all my reviews This review is from: Stanley SL1M09 1M Series Spotlight (Tools & Home Improvement) I purchased this flashlight for geocaching in the middle of the night. The first time I used it it lasted such a short time but I thought I didn't let it charge enough. I let it charge for 2 days and timed it the next time we used it. It lasted whopping 12 minutes before the light faded to a dim yellow. An hour after turning it off it was as bright as can be. Its great if its only needed in short burst but not for any length of time. 0 Help other customers find the most helpful reviews  Was this review helpful to you? , September 7, 2010

Nice light, could use minor improvements

When looking for a spotlight recently, I had a few different criteria that I used for my selection. First, I needed a good spotlight with a long throw, since I am using it for scanning fence lines and checking on horses at night. My barn and horses are not adjacent to my house, so I wanted to be able to do a "drive-by" check on things from my truck, or scan fence without having to walk the whole distance. My second requirement was that I needed something that would be long-lasting. The run/charge times on some spotlights is just atrocious. I definitely needed something that would not get hot (unlike HID lights), since I would be taking this into dusty barns and might need to set it down. Finally, I needed something rugged that would not "blow" a bulb if I dropped it.I currently have two ... 4/5 Michael D. Adams (Jeffersonville, IN USA) - See all my reviews, January 4, 2011

0 5/5 kcm (Pennsylvania) - See all my reviews Verified Purchase(What's this?) This review is from: Cyclops CYC-9WS Thor-by-Sirius 9-Watt Rechargeable LED Spotlight (Tools & Home Improvement) My wife loves this little spotlight. It is very bright, lightweight, and easy to use - with a 'lock-on' feature when she wants it. She uses it when letting our dog out at night (in a rural area) to be sure that no strange animals are nearby. We have a tree line that is over 75 yards from our rear deck, and this light will easily show up any animal at that distance. I recharge it for her about once a month, just because I think I should, but the light has never really dimmed under her usage. 0 Help other customers find the most helpful reviews  Was this review helpful to you? , December 14, 2009
