Stanley, The Impossible Life of Africa's Greatest Explorer

Creator: Tim Jeal | Biography & Autobiography - 2008-10-28

Jeal recovers the reality of Stanley’s life—a life of almost impossible extremes—in this moving story of tragedy, adventure, disappointment, and success. Few have started life as disadvantaged as Stanley.

Publisher: Yale Univ Pr

About this book
"A magnificent new life . . . [and] a superb adventure story. . . . There have been many biographies of Stanley, but Jeal's is the most felicitous, the best informed, the most complete and readable and exhaustive, profiting from his access to an immense new trove of Stanley material." -- Paul Theroux, front page, New York Times Book Review Henry Morton Stanley, so the tale goes, was a cruel imperialist who connived with King Leopold II of Belgium in horrific crimes against the people of the Congo. He also conducted the most legendary celebrity interview in history, opening with, “Dr. Livingstone, I presume?” But these perceptions are not quite true, Tim Jeal shows in this grand and colorful biography. With unprecedented access to previously closed Stanley family archives, Jeal reveals the amazing extent to which Stanley’s public career and intimate life have been misunderstood and undervalued. Jeal recovers the reality of Stanley’s life—a life of almost impossible extremes—in this moving story of tragedy, adventure, disappointment, and success. Few have started life as disadvantaged as Stanley. Rejected by both parents and consigned to a Welsh workhouse, he emigrated to America as a penniless eighteen-year-old. Jeal vividly re-creates Stanley’s rise to success, his friendships and romantic relationships, and his  life-changing decision to assume an American identity. Stanley’s epic but  unfairly forgotten African journeys are thrillingly described, establishing  the explorer as the greatest to set foot on the continent. Few biographies can claim so thoroughly to reappraise a reputation; few portray a more extraordinary historical figure.

    Super Spotlight

I did not purchase this through Amazon. It was on sale at the local Lowes for $24. I couldn't resist at this price. I was a bit skeptical about this spotlight being that it was only 5 watts and only one led bulb. But I assure you that it lives up to the highest of expectations. The led bulb is ultra-high output (192 lumens??) and it fully rechargeable. I purchased it because I live in the city, often hear noises or rustling in my backyard (where my bedroom is located). I was always going out to my deck to investigate the sounds, carrying my small handheld flashlights (also led, but lower output). The light was always too dim to really see what was going on. This spotlight is almost overkill. The light shines a bright spot of white light with a larger, not as bright halo around the spot. The trigger is easy to press, but the light kills as soon as the trigger is released, which is a bit odd. You can "lock" the trigger with the safety lock switch, which will keep the light on if you are... 5/5 M. Shin (Chicago, IL) - See all my reviews, December 9, 2009

I am not a big fan of LED's but I am now. This little light is super bright almost as bright as my Stanley 1 Million candle power light. This is probley the most prower full LED light on the market. Nothing comes close. I t produces a really nice blue/white light. The dimmer is also really handy and works great and really like this light. :) 0 Help other customers find the most helpful reviews  Was this review helpful to you? , July 28, 2009

More to come as I test more

I'm not finished testing it, but I want to advise potential buyers of a couple of drawbacks to this light...one being mentioned several times by other reviewers, and one SURPRISINGLY not yet stated by any reviewer. First (as noted by several), the fact that the brightness control has no memory is a real pain. It will maintain the brightness at which you set it ('clumsily' via the up and down buttons at the rear of the unit), but the second you let go of the trigger and the light shuts off, the 'memory' of where you 'last set' the brightness is LOST. So, 5 seconds later, when you turn on the light again, you have to go through the awkward process of adjusting the brightness control, which takens concentration...and which diverts your attention from where you are walking, etc. But as for the 2nd drawback, I'm VERY surprised that no one, as yet, has mentioned this. Despite 'splashing' the phrases: '192 lumens'!!! and "10 hours runtime" on the front of the package, these two figures don't... 2/5 Frugal Bargain Hunter (Los Angeles, CA) - See all my reviews This review is from: Stanley SL5W09 5 Watt LED Spotlight (Tools & Home Improvement) I'm not finished testing it, but I want to advise potential buyers of a couple of drawbacks to this light...one being mentioned several times by other reviewers, and one SURPRISINGLY not yet stated by any reviewer. (Southwestern Colorado) - See all my reviews This review is from: Stanley HID0109 HID Spotlight (Tools & Home Improvement) It takes a lot to completely please me with most products, but this one has done it. It is WAY WAY WAY Bright! Much brighter than my HID suv headlights. The manual does not go into enough depth on a few items, but a quick phone call to Technical Services answered all my questions. The Technician was VERY courteous and intelligent It also comes with a power cable (Well built) that can be plugged into a cigarette lighter in a vehicle. This bypasses the internal SLA battery and powers the light 100% by the vehicle. I think the price is appropriate considering the super unit that it is. 0 Help other customers find the most helpful reviews  Was this review helpful to you? , November 17, 2009

0 5/5 MX Pilot (CA) - See all my reviews This review is from: Stanley HID0109 HID Spotlight (Tools & Home Improvement) I was so impressed with the Stanley 5 Watt LED spotlight that I bought this one as well to see if it was just as good. This thing is ridiculously bright! I live on the the top of a very large hill and there is a stop sign at the bottom of the hill. I shined this light at it and it lit it up like I was standing right next to it. Oh yeah, the stop sign is over 2 miles away!!! If you have a need for a well made, POWERFUL spotlight, buy this light now. For the money, nothing even comes close. 0 Help other customers find the most helpful reviews  Was this review helpful to you? , October 14, 2009

0 3/5 The Reluctant Survivor "The Reluctant Survivor" - See all my reviews This review is from: Stanley HID0109 HID Spotlight (Tools & Home Improvement) The light is a nice 'warm' light compared to the LED 'cool' light so it's not as hard on your eyes. It's very bright and has a good distance. Nice ergo design. It's not real heavy but it's not a flashlight, so it's gonna weigh more. The only con I have is that the charge doesn't last very long. It comes with a car charger so that does help but I use it when camping/hunting, so it would be great if the charge lasted longer. I'm looking into a portable charger to help. For the price I paid, would definitely recommend this product. 0 Help other customers find the most helpful reviews  Was this review helpful to you? , January 19, 2010

I followed the instructions but got a VERY short duration light

0 1/5 Frugal Bargain Hunter (Los Angeles, CA) - See all my reviews Verified Purchase(What's this?) This review is from: Stanley SLM09 2M Series Spotlight (Tools & Home Improvement) I followed the instructions to let it charge for a WHOPPING 20 hours on the first run, but despite that, all I got was 15 minutes of quickly diminishing light. The next run (...I tested it again because sometimes rechargable batteries have to be 'conditioned'), only yielded 5 additional minutes of rapidly diminishing light. And this thing is GIGANTIC. I thought it would be like their new, compact, 'yellow' 5 watt models that I've seen in the stores, but this one is about 3 times the size. 0 Help other customers find the most helpful reviews  Was this review helpful to you? , July 14, 2010

    Great the first 15 minutes

0 1/5 Jillian (WNY) - See all my reviews This review is from: Stanley SL1M09 1M Series Spotlight (Tools & Home Improvement) I purchased this flashlight for geocaching in the middle of the night. The first time I used it it lasted such a short time but I thought I didn't let it charge enough. I let it charge for 2 days and timed it the next time we used it. It lasted whopping 12 minutes before the light faded to a dim yellow. An hour after turning it off it was as bright as can be. Its great if its only needed in short burst but not for any length of time. 0 Help other customers find the most helpful reviews  Was this review helpful to you? , September 7, 2010

But, lets get some facts straight.

I will list some pictures to go along with this review. I purchased this item and another that looks exactly like it under another name brand, except that this one is red and the other yellow. All of the listed specifications and 2000 lumen claims were the same. However, this red spotlight from Amazon had a sticker on the outside of the package when it arrived that boldly stated maximum output 755 lumens. I was angry. I went back to the product description and saw that it was in fact stated, 2000 lumens. The yellow light had a sticker on its packaging with 2000 lumens listed. FORTUNATELY I did not slap a return sticker on this red one and send it straight back. I charged both units and compared them across a 20 acre field and both beams had equal intensity and distance. This red model had a slightly whiter appearance. I don't know what the deal is with the discrepancy between what is listed on the amazon website and the package cover (2000 vs. 755 maximum lumens ON high beam), but... 5/5 JHF - See all my reviews Verified Purchase(What's this?) Wow!

Just got this thing and let me tell you! :) Now, I do not have experience with any other and I spent way too much time researching these. Thank you to all for your reviews. There may be better out there but I can definitely say not better for the money. I am easily able to make out every detail at least 100 yards as if it were daylight. Buttons are easy and well thought out in that it automatically turns to high when the trigger is depressed and then you can tap a button once for low located at the rear. There is a slide lock to keep it depressed (kind of like what you would see on a hand held drill) and the stand you see in the picture is nice if you need to place it somewhere while working. LED lights tell you how much of a charge you have left by blinking green, red, or staying green.I live where there are woods in the back of my house and I want to see what my dogs are barking at (most likely coyotes). This does it.As for reliability, I don't know yet and will update... 5/5 Bo (Atlanta, GA) - See all my reviews Verified Purchase(What's this?) Good light, bad advertising by amazon

0 2/5 Erik Preteska - See all my reviews Verified Purchase(What's this?) This review is from: Black & Decker LEDLIB Lithium Ion LED Spotlight (Automotive) Ok. First off, the light works well. It IS NOT what is advertised. It is described by Amazon as a 2000 lumen light with a low setting of 700 lumens. THAT IS A LIE!!!! I don't like being misled to sell me something. Get it right Amazon! It is a 755 lumen light with a low setting of about 400 lumens. It is a very bright light. It does have a Li-Ion battery and cree led bulb. It is light weight and not bulky at all. It does come with ac and dc charging cords. This would have gotten a better start rating, but it is mis advertised. I am not the first person to comment on this. FIX IT AMAZON!!!! 0 Help other customers find the most helpful reviews  Was this review helpful to you? , November 8, 2013

    Impressive

I was looking for a small powerful spotlight for use on my boat and this one is almost perfect. 210 lumen does not sound very impressive for a spotlight but the reflector is very deep and the resulting beam is very tight, very bright and has an amazingly long throw. (Streamlight claims a distance of over 2000 feet.) On high power it does a great job picking out boats at the far end of the mooring field and lighting up channel markers from hundreds of yards away. The low power beam is about as bright as a normal 3 cell flashlight. The negatives I have found are:1) It uses C cell batteries which are an extra type to store on the boat.2) This light really should have a medium power setting because of the over 10X difference between the stun and vaporize settings.3) Almost everyone who sees it wants to play with it.Not an issue with the product but Amazon's title for it says "with 12V DC Charge Cord". Durable design, with excellent light output and good battery life

I've had the Streamlight 44900 spotlight just over a month, using it mainly when walking my dogs when it's dark outside, but also occasionally for extra light when doing household repairs. I bought it to replace my Stanley 12v rechargeable halogen spotlight, which has terrible battery life (five minutes at best before dying - a real waste of money that was).My first reaction when opening the Streamlight's box was that it was smaller than expected, and it felt very lightweight. However, with the batteries installed, it feels more substantial, of course.I have used the Streamlight for at least 10 minutes daily so far, so that's a total of over 300 minutes, and it's still on the first set of alkaline batteries, and as bright as every. I like the click-stop stand that is incorporated into the design, which comes in handy when I want to rest the lamp down to attend to some task using both hands. Astonishing Output for an LED Spotlight

PROS: My last rechargeable spotlight (Chinese cr*p) my wife purchased as a present lasted only 6 weeks and since that time I had done a lot of research for a replacement including a couple tests with Stanley HID and LED spotlights. As most know, there are a number of factors which influence the output of a spotlight and is something I don't have time to get into. But, there are many resources out there to use in research. In my case, I wanted the long throw of a high power HID in a practical and easy to use form factor for use aboard my boat. I had tried the Stanley 35 watt HID, and while it throws out a lot of light it proved to be top heavy and of questionable overall quality. However, as with any Streamlight product, the design quality is unquestionable as their products are used in safety and industrial applications. And, the Waypoint is no exception.
