Stanley, The Impossible Life of Africa's Greatest Explorer

Creator: Tim Jeal | Biography & Autobiography - 2008-10-28

Jeal recovers the reality of Stanley’s life—a life of almost impossible extremes—in this moving story of tragedy, adventure, disappointment, and success. Few have started life as disadvantaged as Stanley.

Publisher: Yale Univ Pr

About this book
"A magnificent new life . . . [and] a superb adventure story. . . . There have been many biographies of Stanley, but Jeal's is the most felicitous, the best informed, the most complete and readable and exhaustive, profiting from his access to an immense new trove of Stanley material." -- Paul Theroux, front page, New York Times Book Review Henry Morton Stanley, so the tale goes, was a cruel imperialist who connived with King Leopold II of Belgium in horrific crimes against the people of the Congo. He also conducted the most legendary celebrity interview in history, opening with, “Dr. Livingstone, I presume?” But these perceptions are not quite true, Tim Jeal shows in this grand and colorful biography. With unprecedented access to previously closed Stanley family archives, Jeal reveals the amazing extent to which Stanley’s public career and intimate life have been misunderstood and undervalued. Jeal recovers the reality of Stanley’s life—a life of almost impossible extremes—in this moving story of tragedy, adventure, disappointment, and success. Few have started life as disadvantaged as Stanley. Rejected by both parents and consigned to a Welsh workhouse, he emigrated to America as a penniless eighteen-year-old. Jeal vividly re-creates Stanley’s rise to success, his friendships and romantic relationships, and his  life-changing decision to assume an American identity. Stanley’s epic but  unfairly forgotten African journeys are thrillingly described, establishing  the explorer as the greatest to set foot on the continent. Few biographies can claim so thoroughly to reappraise a reputation; few portray a more extraordinary historical figure.

    Substandard AC Adapter

The LEDLIS is hands-down the best spotlight to own. Two thumbs down on the quality of the AC adapter. Look at the quality of the DC adapter vs. the AC adapter for yourself ... pretty much paints the whole picture. It looks like someone in the company made a bad purchasing decision and wants the consumer to pay for their mistake.I work for a DOE-funded remediation project. We've purchased 5 of these spotlights. They are used around the clock 24/7. We get the 1 hour high beam durations continously, charge after charge. The sad part is that we've found that the AC adapter tends to fail after 3-4 months of service. You should see a green and red flashing LED when the adapter fails, and it will seem like it's fully charged, but the batteries cool to the touch, and the spotlight will cut-out after 6-10 seconds. The spotlight is designed to cut-out at low battery charge to protect the battery from fully discharging, which could lead to a rupture, if the battery was... 3/5 David P Horvath (GALWAY, NY, US) - See all my reviews This review is from: Stanley LEDLIS 10W Lithium Ion LED Rechargeable Spotlight (Automotive) The LEDLIS is hands-down the best spotlight to own. Super bright light, awesome!

I have a 5 acre lot, and needed a good spotlight for looking at my yard at night. I had been using my makita rechargeable flashlight that came with my screw driver/drill set. it was ok, but not bright enough to find my dog even at 300 feet... unless she was looking at me and her eyes reflected. So a replacement was on the list!I first tried the Cyclops 9w 3x LED spotlight. It was pretty much the same as my makita light, just whiter since it was LED and a little more focused. At 300 feet -- only a TAD brighter... not worth the money. So, after some more research and looking at a flashlight message board, i figured I'd give this light a try. I got it 7 hours before it got dark, perfect for the 6 hour initial charge time (it indicated fully charged before that). So, to the point: This light is AMAZING. I didn't know a single LED could produce that much light, and throw that far. At 300 feet, you can see very brightly and in detail. AT 500 feet,... 5/5 WiseBuyer - See all my reviews Verified Purchase(What's this?) Great handheld spotlight

This thing throws a lot of light, yet is very lightweight and compact for a pistol grip spotlight. I just got it, so I can't comment on how long it will last, other than to say that it looks and feels quite sturdy. The grip is comfortable, and the trigger lock/unlock bar and the beam intensity button can be activated with the same hand holding it. It has a very nice fold out stand built-in. This allows you to set the light on the ground with the beam pointing up at a 45 degree angle. The light beam is white and bright with a long reach. It has an intense focused beam in the center which is 10 - 15 feet in diameter at about 150 feet. Surrounding that is a 90 degree cone of light that is fairly substantial. I'm surrounded by trees, so I can't estimate how far the beam reaches, but an object 150 feet away is lit up like daylight. The focus of the beam is not adjustable. The light always comes on at high intensity, but the power toggle is easy to reach. The LED beam gives... 5/5 C. M. Girlinghouse (Crosby, Texas United States) - See all my reviews, July 20, 2013

    Super Spotlight

I did not purchase this through Amazon. It was on sale at the local Lowes for $24. I couldn't resist at this price. I was a bit skeptical about this spotlight being that it was only 5 watts and only one led bulb. But I assure you that it lives up to the highest of expectations. The led bulb is ultra-high output (192 lumens??) and it fully rechargeable. I purchased it because I live in the city, often hear noises or rustling in my backyard (where my bedroom is located). I was always going out to my deck to investigate the sounds, carrying my small handheld flashlights (also led, but lower output). The light was always too dim to really see what was going on. This spotlight is almost overkill. The light shines a bright spot of white light with a larger, not as bright halo around the spot. The trigger is easy to press, but the light kills as soon as the trigger is released, which is a bit odd. You can "lock" the trigger with the safety lock switch, which will keep the light on if you are... 5/5 M. Shin (Chicago, IL) - See all my reviews, December 9, 2009

I am not a big fan of LED's but I am now. This little light is super bright almost as bright as my Stanley 1 Million candle power light. This is probley the most prower full LED light on the market. Nothing comes close. I t produces a really nice blue/white light. The dimmer is also really handy and works great and really like this light. :) 0 Help other customers find the most helpful reviews  Was this review helpful to you? , July 28, 2009

More to come as I test more

I'm not finished testing it, but I want to advise potential buyers of a couple of drawbacks to this light...one being mentioned several times by other reviewers, and one SURPRISINGLY not yet stated by any reviewer. First (as noted by several), the fact that the brightness control has no memory is a real pain. It will maintain the brightness at which you set it ('clumsily' via the up and down buttons at the rear of the unit), but the second you let go of the trigger and the light shuts off, the 'memory' of where you 'last set' the brightness is LOST. So, 5 seconds later, when you turn on the light again, you have to go through the awkward process of adjusting the brightness control, which takens concentration...and which diverts your attention from where you are walking, etc. But as for the 2nd drawback, I'm VERY surprised that no one, as yet, has mentioned this. Despite 'splashing' the phrases: '192 lumens'!!! and "10 hours runtime" on the front of the package, these two figures don't... 2/5 Frugal Bargain Hunter (Los Angeles, CA) - See all my reviews This review is from: Stanley SL5W09 5 Watt LED Spotlight (Tools & Home Improvement) I'm not finished testing it, but I want to advise potential buyers of a couple of drawbacks to this light...one being mentioned several times by other reviewers, and one SURPRISINGLY not yet stated by any reviewer. Used nightly when out with my dogs. Needed recharging only every 4-6 days. Purchased about 7 or 8 weeks ago. Light bulb just went out and cannot find anyone (store or internet) who sells replacement. Very good, but not perfect.

This is the second spotlight I bought this week. The first was a Coleman 4351-700. I did not realize from looking at it on the Internet how big and heavy it would be. It is enormous and extremely heavy because it uses a sealed lead acid battery (SLA) (like a car battery). My wife said it was too heavy and she couldn't get her hand around it. I returned it without ever opening the bubble pack packaging. The Stanley seemed like everything I ever wanted. I need it for my sail boat where space is at a very high premium and every pound of weight really matters. This light is small, powerful, and light weight. The light has a very tight beam and is even more powerful than I need. It was easy to light up trees that were 1500 feet away. I didn't have line of sight to anything further away on my first outing. You can adjust the light brighter or dimmer than the default setting. I didn't notice much more light when I went to the brightest setting. Bad Design

I have both the waterproof and non-waterproof versions. The waterproof version will not hold a charge very well and therefore gives very little operating life. About to throw it away, I decided to look into what was happening as the non-waterproof version works great and others have had the poor battery performance as well with this model. The rotating on/off switch does not penetrate thru the plastic. Instead it moves a magnet that causes one to three internal magnetic reed switches to activate and allow current to flow to the light. The dimmer moves one of them as well I think. To try it yourself - remove the cover, unscrew the three top screws then unscrew the battery charge lid retainer (one screw to the plastic tab). Pull the light out - no wires get in the way. Try a refrigerator magnet over the black area until the light comes on.The problem is with the reed switches. In the OFF (open) position the switches are not truly open, rather they still have a resistance of... 1/5 rough n ready (California) - See all my reviews Verified Purchase(What's this?) Okay, let me just say WOW WHAT A SPOTLIGHT!

I was actually lost looking around on the internet for the "Perfect Father's Day Gift" for not only my Father, but my Husband as well. I wasn't thinking I would hit it out of the ball park with the same gift for both. For my father I thought flashlight or spotlight because what do you buy for the man that has everything? I remembered when I was little, 5 or 6 and my Dad would always have a Mag light flashlight for everything, one in his truck, one in the house, when they came out with the small ones he bought those too, so I figured a flashlight or spotlight might help him around the lake and would definitely be a great gift for him.. I can't afford anything else that man would want :)My Husband, the Camper, Camping is his life, I got him a Tent for Father's Day, a Beautiful Coleman Tent he wanted, but then I bought the light for my Dad and had to get the same for my Husband "from the kids".. :)First let me tell you, we've been faithfully... 5/5 R. Impressive

I was looking for a small powerful spotlight for use on my boat and this one is almost perfect. 210 lumen does not sound very impressive for a spotlight but the reflector is very deep and the resulting beam is very tight, very bright and has an amazingly long throw. (Streamlight claims a distance of over 2000 feet.) On high power it does a great job picking out boats at the far end of the mooring field and lighting up channel markers from hundreds of yards away. The low power beam is about as bright as a normal 3 cell flashlight. The negatives I have found are:1) It uses C cell batteries which are an extra type to store on the boat.2) This light really should have a medium power setting because of the over 10X difference between the stun and vaporize settings.3) Almost everyone who sees it wants to play with it.Not an issue with the product but Amazon's title for it says "with 12V DC Charge Cord". Durable design, with excellent light output and good battery life

I've had the Streamlight 44900 spotlight just over a month, using it mainly when walking my dogs when it's dark outside, but also occasionally for extra light when doing household repairs. I bought it to replace my Stanley 12v rechargeable halogen spotlight, which has terrible battery life (five minutes at best before dying - a real waste of money that was).My first reaction when opening the Streamlight's box was that it was smaller than expected, and it felt very lightweight. However, with the batteries installed, it feels more substantial, of course.I have used the Streamlight for at least 10 minutes daily so far, so that's a total of over 300 minutes, and it's still on the first set of alkaline batteries, and as bright as every. I like the click-stop stand that is incorporated into the design, which comes in handy when I want to rest the lamp down to attend to some task using both hands. Astonishing Output for an LED Spotlight

PROS: My last rechargeable spotlight (Chinese cr*p) my wife purchased as a present lasted only 6 weeks and since that time I had done a lot of research for a replacement including a couple tests with Stanley HID and LED spotlights. As most know, there are a number of factors which influence the output of a spotlight and is something I don't have time to get into. But, there are many resources out there to use in research. In my case, I wanted the long throw of a high power HID in a practical and easy to use form factor for use aboard my boat. I had tried the Stanley 35 watt HID, and while it throws out a lot of light it proved to be top heavy and of questionable overall quality. However, as with any Streamlight product, the design quality is unquestionable as their products are used in safety and industrial applications. It is WAY WAY WAY Bright! Much brighter than my HID suv headlights. The manual does not go into enough depth on a few items, but a quick phone call to Technical Services answered all my questions. The Technician was VERY courteous and intelligent It also comes with a power cable (Well built) that can be plugged into a cigarette lighter in a vehicle. This bypasses the internal SLA battery and powers the light 100% by the vehicle. I think the price is appropriate considering the super unit that it is. 0 Help other customers find the most helpful reviews  Was this review helpful to you? , November 17, 2009

It comes with a car charger so that does help but I use it when camping/hunting, so it would be great if the charge lasted longer. I'm looking into a portable charger to help. For the price I paid, would definitely recommend this product. 0 Help other customers find the most helpful reviews  Was this review helpful to you? , January 19, 2010

I followed the instructions but got a VERY short duration light

0 1/5 Frugal Bargain Hunter (Los Angeles, CA) - See all my reviews Verified Purchase(What's this?) This review is from: Stanley SLM09 2M Series Spotlight (Tools & Home Improvement) I followed the instructions to let it charge for a WHOPPING 20 hours on the first run, but despite that, all I got was 15 minutes of quickly diminishing light. The next run (...I tested it again because sometimes rechargable batteries have to be 'conditioned'), only yielded 5 additional minutes of rapidly diminishing light. And this thing is GIGANTIC. I thought it would be like their new, compact, 'yellow' 5 watt models that I've seen in the stores, but this one is about 3 times the size. 0 Help other customers find the most helpful reviews  Was this review helpful to you? , July 14, 2010

    Great the first 15 minutes

0 1/5 Jillian (WNY) - See all my reviews This review is from: Stanley SL1M09 1M Series Spotlight (Tools & Home Improvement) I purchased this flashlight for geocaching in the middle of the night. The first time I used it it lasted such a short time but I thought I didn't let it charge enough. I let it charge for 2 days and timed it the next time we used it. It lasted whopping 12 minutes before the light faded to a dim yellow. An hour after turning it off it was as bright as can be. Its great if its only needed in short burst but not for any length of time. 0 Help other customers find the most helpful reviews  Was this review helpful to you? , September 7, 2010

    Good buy!

0 5/5 SPD - See all my reviews Verified Purchase(What's this?) This review is from: Supernova Guardian 1300TL Professional Series Ultra Bright Tactical LED Flashlight with Rechargeable Lithium Battery and BrightStart Technology (Misc.) Great product especially for the price. Been using it for a few weeks in the LE business. I've been looking for a rechargeable light to mount on my patrol rifle. I bought this one since I can remove the battery and charge it without having to dismount the entire light. Just unscrew the tail cap, remove the battery and charge it. Before mounting it on my rifle I was using the light at my desk with a computer wiring problem. I had the three AAA batteries that came with the light installed since the rechargeable battery was charging. I was using the light on the brightest setting when I had to leave my desk suddenly and forgot to turn the light off. When I came back over three hours later the light was still shining as bright as it was when I left. Its been dropped a few times and still works like new. Good buy so far!! 0 Help other customers find the most helpful reviews  Was this review helpful to you? , March 2, 2014

    Some things to consider...

I have been researching flashlights for a year now; to find the best gift for my Dad on this years father's day. I decided to place my hopes in the Supernova Guardian 1300TL.Things I liked:-The shipping time was great, provided by Amazon Prime.-The kit that the flashlight comes in looks great in terms of visuals and design, and is also gift friendly.- Both Lithium rechargeable batteries were already at full charge right out of the box.-I could tell the Guardian was hand tested for quality prior to shipping.-The kit comes with a unique instructions manual. It not only explains how to use your Supernova in great detail, but the creators answers the FAQs with a sense of confidence that their product is the best.-The Guardian is very well built in terms of Durability and Function.-It can operate on either 3 triple A batteries (with the included converter) or ONE 18650 Lithium Battery (Comes with 2 total).-Although... 5/5 Morale - See all my reviews Verified Purchase(What's this?)
