Learning about the Value of a Tuned Ignition System

“Most often,” states Jamie Hanson, the other half of this two-brother team, “when a bike comes in spitting and coughing with an ignition problem, a coil might be shot, a plug fouled, or, and this happens a lot, the guy might have gotten a little... A handful of upgrade components together with a “dyno tune” within the ignition repays significantly, and the more modified the motor, say the guys at SPP, the more essential that ignition upgrade becomes. Maybe some hot new coils, definitely an adjustable control module, fine quality plug cables, and performance quality spark plugs to match, that makes up the parts list. Speed’s utilizes the plug-in Daytona Twin Tee modules on those motorcycles and with the Twin Tee program, adjusts the ignition exactly as it’ll be completed with a Power Commander, straight down to selecting the multi-spark settings and single-or... Along with tailor made calibration, enhancements to the coils, spark plugs, and plug wires make sense, too. When the pressure goes up the same is true for the the temperature, and since spark plugs must eliminate heat, a colder heat range spark plug might be needed. With a fuel-injected motorcycle that custom made ignition tweaks, adjusting the advance and timing can be achieved utilizing the same Power Commander that the fuel delivery. Matching these hi-po coils using the most reliable set of low-resistance cables you can buy is yet another excellent move. From a carburetor as well as a set of two injectors, a well calibrated fuel mixture won’t present the whole performance it’s capable of if it hasn’t been fired at right moment along with a strong ignition. That optimized fuel mixture demands an equally optimized ignition system and pro tuners definitely know this. Neglect the ignition, especially the advance curve, and you’ll be leaving a lot of the rewards from any performance pipes, pistons, cams, and heads that you may possibly currently have directly on the table. At Speed’s Performance Plus (SPP) an ignition upgrade is definitely part of the plan. But first come the basics, those common ignition problems that surface from time to time. Though one plug is firing the charge in the cylinder ready for it, the other one is sparking off within the cylinder that’s not ready for its power stroke. If any residual fuel charge is left in the cylinder, which is often the outcome, it’ll also be ignited. Hard copper-core wires, however, aren’t often best with those adjustable ignition units. Neglect the ignition step in a performance tune and you’re missing out on a lot. High-output coils, supplying up to 45,000 volts, will definitely alllow for a smoother-running, easier-starting motor. Iridium tipped plugs, such as the NGK Iridium IXs SPP utilizes, have been created specifically for the performance enthusiast. An excellent substitute, savvy and modern tuners have realized, is a spiral-core style spark plug cable, easily available. Modified engines, specifically when the pressure have been bumped up, will often require a differ from the stock spark plug specs.

Save yourself a lot of money with these!

I drive a 99 Grand Marquis that just turned 100K in miles, and I had the normal misfire due to the manifold leak of coolant into the spark plug cylinder, the check engine light turned on (and would flash at times), and the engine would run rough. Of course, I go down to Autozone to have them pull the codes and turns out that cylinders 2 & 3 were the culprit. I did try to change all 8 spark plugs first to see if that would solve the problem. Go to Autozone to ask that they turn the check engine light off (which they reluctantly did once I explained to them that I'm trying to service the car and not get around the state smog check). I drive out of the parking lot, and the light comes back on. Go back, same cylinders. So, now it's time to change the ignition coils. I almost had a heart attack at the store when they said $50+ each and that they suggest changing all of them! (Of course they suggest changing all of them!)So, I come home, check on Amazon and find this... 5/5 Blueman 46 (Las Vegas, NV) - See all my reviews Verified Purchase(What's this?) (Not a) Knock-off

0 5/5 fferd - See all my reviews Verified Purchase(What's this?) This review is from: Motorcraft DG508 Ignition Coil (Automotive) Purchased this thinking it was a genuine Ford part, but its a knock-off with no discernable markings. Still working as it should 2 1/2 months later so here's hoping it lasts.UPDATE: My mistake, this turns out to be a genuine Motorcraft part. This item, at least for me at the time, came in plain packaging and the coil pack itself did not have any brand labeling on it unlike the coil packs it was replacing so I made the assumption it was a knock-off. Changed rating to 5 stars and this coil pack is still running strong. 0 Help other customers find the most helpful reviews  Was this review helpful to you? , April 13, 2012

What I received was 1 coil 4 brackets and 4 weirs. It was missing 1 coil. I cannot articulate my dismay over this situation. I have a customer with a dead line who is ready to take is business else ware. The lack of quality control on ACCEL's behalf has had a direct impact on my business. My faith in ordering the ACCEL brand has been shaken. I cannot make future investments in a company's product if every order is a gamble.
