A very good overview of geothermal exchange heating and cooling or ground source heat pumps

This is a very good book for someone wishing to better understand what geothermal exchange heating and cooling is and how it will greatly reduce the cost of heating and cooling a building. Written for the homeowner and incorporating the author's experience in going to geothermal, it is a pleasant read and is quite comprehensive. Not well understood and sometimes mistaken for geothermal electric power---which uses heat generated naturally deep within the earth for electricity generation---geothermal exchange heating and cooling (or use of ground source heat pumps) will significantly reduce the amount of energy used for heating and cooling for most temperate land areas. It is in much greater use in northern Europe, Canada, and elsewhere than in the U.S.A. Note: an excellent supplement to this book is the International Ground Source Heat Pump Association (IGSHPA) manual "Geothermal Exchange Heating and Cooling" which serves a comprehensive yet concise primer, primarily for... 4/5 savvybuyer (New England (USA)) - See all my reviews Verified Purchase(What's this?) Understandable, affordable and easy to read information on geothermal for all consumers.

In my efforts to get understandable and easy to read information in the hands of consumers on green technologies, it is refreshing to see an affordable book come out on geothermal heating and cooling technologies. “Geo Power” is just that; affordable, understandable and richly illustrated. When I received my copy, the first thing that caught my eye was the great illustrations. From the basics of how geothermal loops go into the ground to the comparisons between a refrigerator and a heat pump, the pictures tell a thousand words.Don Lloyd’s book, “Geo Power” should be the first thing an individual considering geothermal should purchase to help them understand geothermal heating and cooling. I believe that after reading through its pages, it will become clear that geothermal heating and cooling is the best way to reduce energy consumption, reduce CO2 emissions, and increase our comfort in our homes and buildings, period.Jay EggEggGeothermal Consulting... 5/5 Kindle Customer (San Diego, CA) - See all my reviews Verified Purchase(What's this?) Informative explanations

4/5 Paul Barton - See all my reviews Verified Purchase(What's this?) This review is from: Geo Power: Stay Warm, Keep Cool and Save Money with Geothermal Heating & Cooling (Paperback) Good material written in a clear concise way. Definitely directed towards those in colder climates but the principles are explained clearly enough. It allowed me to learn enough to know that ground sourced heat pumps weren't for me but air sourced heat pumps may be useful for my location in rural Western Australia (hot & temperate climate). If you want to be able to understand the technology and be able to have a discussion with suppliers, then I would recommend this book. Repetitious

2/5 Kenneth Marr (Apex, NC) - See all my reviews Verified Purchase(What's this?) This review is from: The Smart Guide to Geothermal: How to Harvest Earth's Free Energy for Heating and Cooling (Kindle Edition) Good parts. Explains how geothermal works. Has a few web site references to standards used and companies involved. Nice summary of tax credits. Lots of generalities but with the appropriate warning that the concept is simple but details mater. In particular the ground in which your system will be set: clay, sand, water impact the amount oh heat that can be exchanged per length of installed piping and those require calculations (not given in book), soil Ph (acid or alkaline) influences pipe typeSeveral stories about specific geo projects including the author's own homeBad. Not much real information. A couple of hours on the web uncovers most of what the author contributes. At least one third of the book is pure repetition of things the author has already said. At $.99 it would be an ok book. At the actual price...not really. Yes, I'm sorry I bought it and I wouldn't recommend it it to friends (or anyone else) Help other customers find the most helpful reviews  Was this review helpful to you? , May 12, 2015

    A Good Start

I decided to investigate Geothermal because we are burning money like fuel with an oil burner that is 34 years old. I knew nothing about it and thought this may be a good primer on the subject. It is. This book gave me enough info to ask semi intelligent questions of friends and neighbors who now use geothermal and the area contractors who install it. The book did what it set out to do. It was slightly repetitive at times, but I didn't mind. It does give you an idea of your options and it uses examples of new construction as well as retrofit. Through the brief education of this book, I had the tools to understand the options, but nothing was better than talking to actual users after reading the book. I have found that I probably won't use it. Friends and neighbors have had problems with contractors going out of business and parts being hard to find. One neighbor is on his second system in 10 years. My biggest concern is what will happen to the service and support industry... 3/5 A. EXCELLENT!!!

5/5 Amazon Customer - See all my reviews Verified Purchase(What's this?) This review is from: The Smart Guide to Geothermal: How to Harvest Earth's Free Energy for Heating and Cooling (Kindle Edition) Great easy read. The author used many examples of geothermal; installations performed; and explained in an easy-to-understand fashion the details and complexities of a geothermal system. The reading of this book made me more enthusiastic and hopeful about this clean, renewable energy source; and it should be required reading for any homeowner looking into a geothermal system.
