The R/C Car Bible, How to Build, Tune and Drive Electric and Nitro-Powered Radio Control Cars on and Off-Road

Creator: Robert H. Schleicher | 2006-11-15

In this volume for veteran and newbie R/C enthusiasts alike, ace hobby writer Robert Schleicher offers a fully illustrated guide to both electric and fuel remote-control vehicles.

Publisher: Voyageur Press

About this book
When it comes to scale-size motorsport thrills, few hobbies can match the untethered thrills of R/C cars. Whether screaming across the asphalt or bounding over a dirt course, R/C cars offer enthusiasts an ever-increasing level of power, detail, and sophistication. In this volume for veteran and newbie R/C enthusiasts alike, ace hobby writer Robert Schleicher offers a fully illustrated guide to both electric and fuel remote-control vehicles. From selecting the right scale and tending to the power source to tuning the chassis and choosing gear ratios and tires, Schleicher covers all the angles that go into R/C driving. He also considers nitro power, painting and decals, off-road driving techniques, setting up road-race courses in parking lots, and even building off-road courses. Appendices include a glossary and information on clubs, publications, and suppliers.

This review is from: 1:5 Scale Maxstone Crawler 2.4GHz Ready to Run (Toy) I live in the mountains so I have a lot of rocks and climbs. I love the outdoors. I like larger and more powerful toys so this 1/5th was right for me. I like playing with this guy even though my dogs don't. I am very satisfied with the performance of this electric.Eddie 0 Help other customers find the most helpful reviews  Was this review helpful to you? , June 20, 2014

Good start but quickly needs upgrades

It's a good vehicle for the price but plan on some upgrades if you keep it long term. If it starts losing power in reverse, don't replace the speed control, replace the radio. If you are handy with basic tools, do not pay for the overpriced Exceed upgrades when you can buy the Losi Mini Rock Crawler upgrades for far less. Servo mounts are exactly the same, steering knuckles are exactly the same. The C-hubs are different because in the MRC (Mini Rock Crawler), they capture the bearing instead of in the axle with the EMS (Exceed Max Stone) but a few minutes with a flat file and they fit fine. The bodies are interchangeable, requiring only new holes or a reposition of the body posts. The MRC tires and wheels are also a direct swap and provide far better traction, just remember to weight them. MRC front CVD's will fit, again with a minor bit of filing. Center CVD's will fit with a 5mm ream to accommodate the EMS' larger output shafts. Bent links from the MRC are just a bit... 4/5 Ronald J. This review is from: 1/16th Scale 2.4Ghz Exceed RC MaxStone 4WD Powerful Electric Remote Control Rock Crawler 100% RTR (Toy) read all the reviews.....worth every penny.its too slow and lacks low end throttle control, lets face it....its not a comp crawler.its something to see if your really interested in crawling before you go out and buy a $400 plus crawler.I bought it specifically for the axel size.they fit perfect under my 1/12 scale chevy s10.ive been running it pretty regular....stock drivetrain, electronics are holding up nice.i did drop down to a smaller tire size....which increased battery run time to 12 min.stock form your looking at about 7 mins.im very happy and will by another. 0 Help other customers find the most helpful reviews  Was this review helpful to you? , October 21, 2013

Nice truck for a young newbie

This 1/16th scale truck is a perfect sized RC for a new-comer to the sport. By design it is meant to be slow, but powerful. IT will crawl over so many things and if driven well, it'll amaze even a veteran RCer.Having said that, there are some quality control issues to mention that brings down the rating of this truck.First, the screws are made of a very soft material and a perfectly sized screw driver or allen wrench MUST be used, otherwise stripping occurs in the head of the screw.Secondly, I had an issue with the motor that required pulling it apart and upon inspection I found scorching and evidence of a used motor. After cleaning up with emery paper and an eraser, lubing the bushing and putting together it worked just fine. (Please note - This motor is not made to be repairable, but I have experience in this area.)Third, the truck was to be equipped with a servo saver, it shows this in the parts diagrams included with the truck but mine was not. Which Axial? The Wraith, Honcho or Ridgecrest?

Recently I purchased an Axial Wraith. Would I do so again knowing what I know now? Yes. If I could choose only one of the Axial trucks, I'd probably get one of the SCX 10 versions (Trail Honcho, Jeep Rubicon etc.) All of the Axial vehicles come with the Tamaiya battery connectors. The Traxxas and Deans connectors are far more reliable. If you aren't having any problems with the Tamaiya battery connectors, leave well enough alone. If you start having electrical connection issues, my experience would lead me to believe that the most likely culprit is the Tamaiya battery connectors. I will first discuss the Wraith's weaknesses. After having run the Wraith for the first few times, I was worried that I had made a mistake. The thing that disturbed me was how easily the Wraith tipped over. It has a very high center of gravity. My most important change to the Wraith was to put on Proline Chisel tires and add wheel weights. Together that made a huge difference! In addition moving... 5/5 Louis - See all my reviews This review is from: Axial Racing RTR 1/10 Wraith Electric 4WD Rock Racer (Toy) Recently I purchased an Axial Wraith. BEST CRAWLER EVER

I bought the Wraith a couple months ago to toy around with while deployed to Afghanistan. I also have a Associated RC10GT and two RC18s as well as a Traxxas Revo 3.3 and a Traxxas 1/16th mini brushless Revo (that I also bought while here in Afghanistan).Although the Wraith is in no way speed demon (it is a rock racer/crawler after all), what it lacks in speed it more than makes up for in crawling and just all around bashing. I have had zero durability issues that were not caused by myself (who said I shouldnt try to take a crawler and drop into a ditch from a picnis table?), which resulted in a snapped driveline, but wait......the goody bag that accompanies the truck has replacements. Way to go Axial.I've bashed with a buddy that has a Losi Night Crawler and for being a "competition ready" crawler that goes have the speed of my wraith, it still can't crawl nearly as well as the WraithI have had way more fun in the desert with my Wraith than I have ever... 5/5 wraithman - See all my reviews This review is from: Axial Racing RTR 1/10 Wraith Electric 4WD Rock Racer (Toy) I bought the Wraith a couple months ago to toy around with while deployed to Afghanistan. Axial wraith. A kid's review

0 5/5 Gingerlatte (Chicago, IL USA) - See all my reviews This review is from: Axial Racing RTR 1/10 Wraith Electric 4WD Rock Racer (Toy) This truck is awesome. Me and my dad put some upgrades on it, pro line super swamper tires and axial beadloc black chrome 2.2's. We had to replace the driveshafts after they torqued off with a lipo battery that we ordered from amazon. It comes with a HUGE bag-o-parts, so if you break something you will probably have a replacementthe body panels (yes panels) are held on by small screws. All in all, five stars!
