Teamed with a propane torch- this is about the only way short of heli-arc welding to non-mechanically fabricate aluminum parts together. It does pay to be careful that you get the metal hot enough to allow the rod to melt, wet, and flow smoothly, - - but not hot enough to soften or melt the aluminum you are joining. Because there is no color change in the metal as there is with steel (red, orange, white hot) you need to pay attention and repeatedly test while heating as to when the work pieces are hot enough to melt the rod. There for when I need them.
Okay, you never really know when you need to repair some aluminum, but at least I'm ready. Don't know what I'm doing wrong
Despite following directions, I never could get this to bond properly. Heating the part, not the rod, it took forever to get the rod to melt, and then it didn't stick even if i cleaned it. Works for simple DIY repairs
I'm a neophyte at joining aluminum, so take this with a grain of salt... The Alumiweld seemed unexpectedly easy to use, but from my experience with steel I think this is brazing, not welding - the base metal is not actual raised to melting. It will rather handily rejoin broken aluminum or build up worn areas. I've not tried some of the heavier structural stuff they show on YouTube, but with sheet aluminum and DIY repairs it seems effective enough and not terribly temperamental, melting well below the base metal - although if using it on 0.032" or thinner sheet aluminum I have to be pretty careful of distortions. 4/5 Lawrence Bird (Virginia USA) - See all my reviews, December 11, 2012
