Canoe and Kayak Routes of Northwest Oregon, Including Southwest Washington

Creator: Philip N. Jones | 2007-04-30

Of the three, aluminum was the first to appear when, in 1945, Grumman Aircraft sought a peacetime product to replace its declining aircraft sales. The resulting aluminum canoes were hailed as very durable, and Grumman and other ...

About this book
Phillip Jones has been exploring the Northwest by canoe and kayak for more than 20 years, and presents his favourite outings in this completely revised guide to paddling the flat-water rivers and lakes of northwest Oregon and southwest Washington. Most of these trips can be done in a day, although some can be combined for longer journeys. For each trip, you'll find complete information on where to launch, trip rating, distance, best time to go, points of interest, hazards, portages, and more. You'll find outings on the Willamette River and its tributaries, Oregon coastal rivers, the Columbia Gorge and the lower Columbia River, the Oregon Cascades, and southwest Washington. There are also tips on canoe and kayak paddling techniques, safety techniques, what to do if you capsize, transporting boats, and shuttling cars.

Good size, comfortable, but rowing is horrible & questionable durability

I debated long and hard between getting the Excursion 5 and the Seahawk II. I wanted a boat that I could immediately take out and go rowing, but one that is durable (sometimes there are branches sticking up in the shallow river here) and comfortable. I also wanted to get a boat that I could eventually mount a motor on in the future. After reading tons of reviews -- and going to the Intex website and other forums -- I bought the Excursion 5 because some forums said the Seahawk II doesn't have motor mount points (this is not true) and some people on here commented that the Excursion 5 is made out of the same "Super-Tough" material as the Seahawk II (this is also not true, but it's very confusing and even the Intex website doesn't make it clear. The Seahawk II is more rigid, can be inflated to higher pressure, and is more puncture-resistant because it is actually a 3-ply system including Super-Tough PVC OVER a nylon fabric layer)As soon as the Excursion 5... 3/5 Matthew W. This fishing raft got us through class IV rapids with no major problems.

Obviously the designers did not build this for whitewater, but if it can hold up to that - for the price, it is outstanding. We had it loaded with camping gear, food, and three people for 4 days, and it didn't even loose air. It will sit three comfortably. 5 is a stretch unless you are VERY comfortable with each other. Weight is no issue. This boat was filled to the brim with water several times and still skidded through shallow water. A pit stop to let the water out and we were cruising again. At one point, the raft was lashed against a rock and turned into the shape of a taco by the raging waters. I was sure it would break, but it didn't!pros:*The oars come in 4 parts that snap and screw together. Assembly is easy. The oar locks work well and allow one person to use two oars.*The seats are comfy. They inflate and latch into the raft.*It comes with a patch kit, but I doubt you will need it.*Three air chambers make it sturdy. We could pump it up in less... 5/5 Brice A. Below is my review in 3 parts: i) a quick review on the boat; (ii) list of 11 recommended mods and accessories; (iii) summary of other people's comments/suggestions and (iv) minor issues for which I invite comments.================Part I: Quick ReviewGenerally, the other reviews here say it all. This is a great general utility boat.1. It is easy to transport. With all my accessories and fishing gear, it fits into the back of my minivan with ease (last seat row collapsed).2. It is roomy enough for my needs. Accommodates two adults with two kids (under 10) easily with battery and fishing gear and trolling motor. My estimate, about 500lbs. I think three adults is comfortable, but four is pushing it.3. Easy to assemble/disassemble but still time consuming (and tiring on hot days)4. Seems durable enough. Fabulous kayak cart!!!

I'm giving the Malone Clipper Deluxe Universal Kayak Cart 5 stars, but I'd give it 10 stars if I could!! This is the second kayak cart I've bought in the past month, because the first cart wasn't up to the job (too small/unbalanced/a strain to pull). I recently purchased a 10' kayak with the idea that my kids and I would be able to pop it onto a kayak cart and pull it the 1/2 mile from our house to the Charles River. My goals were independence, simplicity, and ease of use. The Malone cart is well designed, sturdy, and very easy to load and use (even solo). With the cart centered between bow and stern, the kayak's weight is perfectly balanced so that rolling it along is effortless-- I can literally pull the kayak with one finger!! At the launch site the cart stowed away in seconds: pull pins on the axel allowed me to stow its wheels in the drywell and the metal cart frame folded down and I bungeed it to the bow. I know that my family and I will be using and enjoying the new kayak a... 5/5 SusanM (Cambridge MA) - See all my reviews Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?) economical and good

0 5/5 sev - See all my reviews Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?) This review is from: Malone Clipper Deluxe Universal Kayak Cart (Sports) The Malone Clipper Deluxe Kayak Cart is my third cart. I have looked at and researched many styles of carts. This is the best cart under $100 that I have seen. It arrives in a solid box and takes one minute to put the tires on ... ready to go. The wheels are wider apart than many carts so it is more stable on uneven ground. The design is simple and the manufacturing is well done. The wheels are inflatable, but they feel like they will work even if punctured ... the tire material is very stiff. The tires are thick enough to go over rocks and gravel and are not the best, but are usable, in sand. Malone is a good company and this is a good, well priced, product.By the way, if you regularly have to walk over 100 feet with your kayak, wheeled carts are the way to go. I walk mine a 1000 yards every outing. The Malone cart makes the "to and from" walks safe and easy.I give this 5 stars for the quality at this price. Did I mention the Malone lifetime guarantee? 0 Help other customers find the most helpful reviews  Was this review helpful to you? , August 17, 2011

    Very sturdy

I received this as a gift. It seems very sturdy (holds up to 200lbs). I tried it out over some ruff terrain the first day and it does well. We even stacked our two 14' kayaks on it and pulled it down to the water like that (the straps are long enough to fit over both). It was a bit tippy, but made moving them both a lot easier.Be prepaired to have a pair of needle nose pliers to inflate the tires when you get it. The air valve is a little hard to reach and inflate at the same time, the pliers makes it a bit easier. There is also a very strong smell that comes with it. My house still has the smell a few weeks later, so if you are sensitive, put it outside for a while to air out.My only reason for a 4 star review is the size. I was hoping it would fit inside the hatch of my kayak. It is very wide and while the wheels come off it does not make it small enough to fit inside my large rear hatch. I can solve the problem my using a bungee cord and straping it to the back of my... 4/5 B. Barner (AL, USA) - See all my reviews, October 1, 2011

I just got the paddle, and here are some details of it:1. It weighs 3.5 pounds, (so, this is not subjetive info; I read reviews here, some say heavy, some say superlight. now, you can determine. I am a male, 5ft10in tall/160 pounds/strong swimmer, and it feels a little bit heavy for a paddle in my opinion. So, if you are a regular female, it might be a concern.)2. The length of mine is 8 feet and 3/4 of an inch.(I guess there is a small variation for each one, but sure it is a long sweet one. My kayak is an OldTown Dirigo 120, the greatest width of the hull is 28 inches, so it needs a 96-inch paddle.)3. The connector can be adjusted, as a result, you can twist the angle of the two blades, which is a nice feature.4. It looks strong and durable.5. The two plastic blades are quite big, and the blade has a sutble curve, which is nice.6. 0 5/5 BeaverNation - See all my reviews Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?) This review is from: Intex Kayak Paddle / Boat Oars (Sports) I use this product as Kayak Paddles for an inflatable kayak. I am a novice to kayaking and probably have been using my kayak once a week through this summer. I use my Kayak Paddles on small lakes, large rivers, and even once on some Class 2 white water. For me these paddles worked perfect my myself and girlfriend. I looked at a lot of places and couldn't find any for less then $35 in the stores. I believe that these for $17 are even better then what I was seeing in the 35-40 range. So for a beginner that is most interested in just getting out on the water and enjoying the weather, these are more then you will ever need. 0 Help other customers find the most helpful reviews  Was this review helpful to you? , August 2, 2010

    Nice Boat for Fishing

I got this boat to take out on the local lakes around Indiana so that I could cover more of the lake shores crappie fishing. The boat takes a while to inflate with the pump that comes with it. There are three main chambers to inflate, the floor, the inner hull, and the outer hull. Once inflated the boat is farely sturdy, and I am 260 lbs. The fishing pole holders are a nice addition, and they come with plugs that you attach to your pole and then plug into the holder when you want to row or something other than fish. The boat is very easy to deflate. It only took about 15 minutes to get all the air out so that I could pack into my car. It comes with a large bag, and packed up it fits in the back seat of my 2 door Honda Civic. The two complaints that I have Are that the oars are a little too short, and the repair kit is useless (see paragraph below about the repair kit). They could be about 5 to 10 inches longer. I felt like I was rowing with my arms straight up in... 4/5 Derik G. Wilson "Derik" (Greenwood, IN) - See all my reviews, May 17, 2013

    Excursion 5 Inflatable Boat

0 4/5 bbishopiii - See all my reviews This review is from: Intex Excursion 5 Boat Set - 2013 Model (Sports) After buying boat and taking it out for the first time I found it was a perfect size for max three people if you want to fish. After returning I installed a homemade wood floor to make it more stable and what a difference that made! Yes, as some others have stated though, it does loose some air over time. I now bring the hand pump with me and it works fine. For the money you can't beat it. I also added a seat, a milk create works well. I added wood to the top of the milk crate and secured a swivel to the top of it, and attached a seat. 0 Help other customers find the most helpful reviews  Was this review helpful to you? , June 15, 2013

Current support posts are molded plastic material, but appears to be strong enough to support my 70+ lb aluminum pram. Should be able to support my pram plus gear, rods and anchors. Easy to assemble, light enough, but a little bulky. So far happy with purchase. It did come with a extra set of support posts in box. Good product, but one major problem

0 3/5 Robert - See all my reviews Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?) This review is from: Davis Wheel-A-Weigh Small Boat Dolly Excellent construction, all aluminium and plastic, so no fear of rust when used in salt water. Lightweight, easily foldable, rolls pretty easily. I use it on a Sunfish, which weighs around 135 pounds with mast & sail. The problem is getting the boat on and off the dolly in the water. Because the dolly floats (pneumatic tires), it will not stay still to let me slide the boat on it, it just floats up under the boat and moves with the boat. If I try to do it in shallower water so the dolly is grounded under the boat, I still can't slide the boat on the dolly because it just rolls with the boat as I try to slide it on. The arm doesn't really help at all. If I can find a solution, I'd be very happy with this product. 0 Help other customers find the most helpful reviews  Was this review helpful to you? , September 1, 2013

Looks like a small bass boat now )Motor mounts compress excessively due to temperature so one has to ensure that the motor clamps are tightened periodically. No cleats installed and since this is a "poly" boat, no dependable adhesive to attach. Resorted to "toggle" bolts.Battery placements are fine if your battery is small. Marine size batteries are a bit long.Built in rod holders are better suited to uprights for a top of some sort and not fishing rods. Too erect, with... 4/5 SeBo - See all my reviews This review is from: KL Industries American 12 Jon Fishing Boat (Sports) Have had this boat for 3 years now. Returned cause unable to register boat with state

I purchased this boat and it arrived in a very expeditious manner. However, I received two manufacture statement of origins (MSO), one of which was blank, and the other was blank minus a stamped signature from a person at Amazon named Nathan Allen (never figured out who he is). When I presented this to the state of Florida tag office to register the boat, they said this paperwork is absolutely incomplete. They said Allen needed to sign the MSO, and I must provide a receipt with a VIN and price.Well, I called the manufacturer KL Industries for help. I rapidly learned they don't answer or retrun calls, but they do answer emails. Their response to me was the tag agency is wrong, and the person working with me was to strict. Go back and ask for a different representative; I started laughing when she told me this. it was the worst customer service advise that I ever received. She also told me KL would not assist with a completed MSO and receipt. I explained that all I... 3/5 JJDNSB "Roberto J" (Melbourne, Florida, United States) - See all my reviews Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?) BAD BAD experience . . .

First, let me say that I think the boat looks the way I thought it would (the pictures are accurate). It's pretty much what I expected and can't wait to get it in the water. Secondly, the shipping was first rate. CEVA did a fantastic job and EVERYONE I spoke with there was extremely nice. Now the BAD, BAD part. The boat arrived with 2 MSO'S. One completely blank, and the other one with some hand written information on it, and a couple of rubber stamped things that are absolutely UNacceptable to my state for registration purposes. It is my understanding from my state that an MSO MUST be filled in by the MANUFACTURER and it MUST include the HIN (hull identification number), manufacturer, length, model, year, maximum horsepower rating, etc, and that this is a FEDERAL REQUIREMENT. I received NONE of this. At this point, I have been in contact with Amazon (VERY nice) and they are attempting to assist me with getting this straightened out post haste. In fairness to... 1/5 scgvegas "scg" (Las Vegas, NV USA) - See all my reviews This review is from: KL Industries American 12 Jon Fishing Boat (Sports) First, let me say that I think the boat looks the way I thought it would (the pictures are accurate).
