Canoe and Kayak Routes of Northwest Oregon, Including Southwest Washington

Creator: Philip N. Jones | 2007-04-30

Of the three, aluminum was the first to appear when, in 1945, Grumman Aircraft sought a peacetime product to replace its declining aircraft sales. The resulting aluminum canoes were hailed as very durable, and Grumman and other ...

Publisher: The Mountaineers Books

About this book
Phillip Jones has been exploring the Northwest by canoe and kayak for more than 20 years, and presents his favourite outings in this completely revised guide to paddling the flat-water rivers and lakes of northwest Oregon and southwest Washington. Most of these trips can be done in a day, although some can be combined for longer journeys. For each trip, you'll find complete information on where to launch, trip rating, distance, best time to go, points of interest, hazards, portages, and more. You'll find outings on the Willamette River and its tributaries, Oregon coastal rivers, the Columbia Gorge and the lower Columbia River, the Oregon Cascades, and southwest Washington. There are also tips on canoe and kayak paddling techniques, safety techniques, what to do if you capsize, transporting boats, and shuttling cars.

    Perfect Inexpensive Kayak

I'm a student who has barely any money for fun things, so I decided to buy a kayak so I could have a lot of fun with just a one time "fee". It's perfect for being only around $80.00. I have no complaints since it's my first kayak and I have nothing to compare it to. I do highly recommend buying a different paddle, the one included isn't too comfortable and efficient since it's on the short end. People who complain about it's "tracking"(going straignt while paddling) need to understand this is not a touring kayak made of carbon fiber. It's an $80 inflatable kayak. I've taken it out on lakes around 20 times so far in the last two months and have had only one leak. The leak was from me being dumb and taking it to the ocean where a shell made a nice little tear. This was easily fixed with the included repair kit. All 20 trips have been for at least one hour. Two of those were "long" trips(6 miles round trip). It holds up fine in strong winds and mild waves. On my second long trip the... 5/5 Stephen Aiken - See all my reviews, April 29, 2009

    Incredible

This kayak is a winner: excellent price and very good performance. I bought two of the one-man kayaks (one for me, one for friends and relatives). So far we have traveled 31 miles total spread across four separate river trips down the Rio Grande River (calm waters) here in New Mexico. I am 6'0" and weigh 190 lbs, and the kayak fit me fine. Others I have taken with me have ranged from my 6'2" son-in-law (length was OK for him) and a friend (205 lbs., weight was not a concern). The kayaks handled very well, and both trips were a real joy. Here are some observations:- Inflation is very fast with the included high efficiency hand/foot pump. There are four air chambers, and the kayak has never taken more than about 4 minutes to inflate. I throw the pump into the kayak behind my seat when we take off, just in case I need to top up later (which I never have had to do).- Storage and transport are a breeze. The kayak stores in a small, cloth travel case about... 5/5 Marshall Henrie "papayasalsa" (Albuquerque, NM United States) - See all my reviews, June 2, 2010

Good bargain, but some design flaws.

The Intex Challenger Kayak is easy to inflate, affordable, and comes in a convenient carrying case. Unfortunately, there were some major use details overlooked in the production of this craft. The edges of the plastic seam on the rim around the seat have not been sealed flush, so the seams create a sharp edge that rubs against your torso and makes the ride uncomfortable. The paddle is not adjustable for height and has the joints precisely where you would want your hands to go. They are coated in rubber rings, seemingly to allow for a more comfortable grip, but I am a woman with small hands my hands are too wide to fit comfortably on the grip. The carrying case is a thin parachute-like material, with wide stitched seams that don't hold up to the strength of carrying the boat. There is only one valve for both sides, which routes through the nose of the boat. Deflating it is not as easy as it should be. The case is wide enough to comfortably get the thing back in, though... 3/5 Rachael - See all my reviews Verified Purchase(What's this?) I LOVE MY HULLAVATOR!!!!!!

For a short female doing your own loading, this system is AWESOME!!! Some call it pricey, but hey...you get what you pay for. It makes loading a kayak soooo easy! The only thing I have problems with is getting the loading arms correctly positioned on the frame. It's difficult to line up the holes so one can insert the pins that hold the arms to the frame. I'm 5'4" and have a tall car (Hyundai Santa Fe) so holding the arms up (each one weighs about 25#)and trying to align all the holes can be a little difficult. That is the ONLY drawback for me, but a taller person might not have this issue. The system comes with a video on how to load it, straps for securing the kayak to the arms and extra fore and aft tie-downs.The roof rack bars have locks, but the arms don't so I bought a couple of long cable locks for when I leave the car to kayak.Every time I use it I find myself saying out loud, "I LOVE this thing!"I would totally recommend... 5/5 Lakotasue "otterlynn" (Ypsi MI) - See all my reviews Verified Purchase(What's this?) Great idea needs better execution

I've seen many video clips on the net introducing this product (search youTube) so I will skip the functions of it. Lifting my 17' kayak onto my CR-V roof is not something enjoyable, so I bite the bullet. I had to abandoned my factory cross bar and installed the Thule Aero Rapid bars (Thule square and Yakima round will also work but the Aero bar looks much nicer) to accommodate that. This is needed for the load bar to extend 4 to 8 inch beyond the foot, my factory bar will not do that. So after sinking in about $700 I got this going. The installation was not difficult; they even included a DVD with installation instructions. It seems the Hullavator is designed with the square bar in mind. The adaptation to the Aero bars looks like an afterthought. They gave you 4 thin plastic clear films per arm to protect the contact points. A square bar would fit nicely under the mounting bar. But for the Aero bar there were just 4 contact points; I don't even want to tighten the screws too... 4/5 C. Chang (DFW) - See all my reviews, August 2, 2008

Thule roof racks' load limit at odds with the use of Hullavator

Some things to keep in mind with the Hullavator. The rack itself in its cardboard box weighs exactly 50 lbs. and the actual net weight of the arms is more than 40 lbs. so the roof rack needs to support that weight along with the kayak(s). With two kayaks you have 80 lbs. of weight before you have added a boat. Thule specifies a load limit of 165 lbs. for their roof racks without exception. That means each side of the roof rack can support no more than a 82.5 lb. load and with the 40 lb. weight of the Hullavator that leaves capacity for using it with a kayak weighing 42 lbs. or less. The Hullavator is rated for a 70 lb. kayak but that ignores Thules stated load limitation for ALL their roof racks. The other aspect that was not clear to me is that Thule specifies that the cross bar needs to extend 4-8 inches past the side of the vehicle. This is needed to prevent the rack in its down position from hitting the car. But in addition there are times when one needs to get between... 1/5 Winter - See all my reviews This review is from: Thule Hullavator (Sports) Some things to keep in mind with the Hullavator.
